On July 1 2024, a group of faculty members and students from the Faculty of Communication of our University visited MGX Studio, one of the world's few established virtual production studios (Virtual Production Studio). There are only a few other studios with a similar size to MGX Studio globally. During the visit to MGX Studio, new digital production models were evaluated during the visit where the dialog between the University and the film industry was developed, ideas and experiences were shared.
School of Communication academicians Dr. Hasan Ramazan Yılmaz and Lecturer Zafer Topaloğlu and Mohamad Al Masry, Ahmet Bilgiç and Bilal Çolak from the Department of New Media and Communication, were welcomed by MGX Studio Manager CTO Fatih Eke and MGX Studio Supervisor Okan Mertgil.
Fatih Eke stated that as a result of the R&D studies during the establishment phase of MGX Studio, they turned to the "virtual production" model, which goes beyond the "green screen" production model with certain aesthetic and technological aspects, and gave information about the technical and financial aspects of the installation process of the virtual production studio and the production systematics in the studio.
MGX Studio, which has a total active usage area of 100 m², has a curved LED panel with a width of 17 meters. This creates a 180-degree shooting area 4 meters high and 25 meters long in the virtual production studio. The circular platform extending in front of these LED panels with 9K resolution is the world's first rotatable platform of this size, which can rotate 360 degrees every 90 seconds with the help of a digital encoder. With the 5.6K resolution LED panels on the upper part of the rotatable platform, the content resolution can increase up to 12K. The brightness level of 4000 nits provided by two independent support panels greatly increases the sense of reality in virtual production studio productions.
Stating that they aim to combine traditional and innovative cinematography, MGX Studio Manager Fatih Eke stated that they aim to minimize costs and prevent budget overruns by using virtual production technology that allows the scenes they want to shoot in completely different parts of the world to be shot in a single studio. Emphasizing that they have adopted the slogan "Everything you can imagine is real", MGX Studio Supervisor Okan Mertgil said that the biggest advantage of the team and its difference from other organizations is that it produces a wide content library to be used in film, series and advertising projects instead of producing only project-oriented content. Mertgil also underlined that many videos produced by the creative industries today are moving from green-screen production models to virtual production productions.
The visit ended after discussions on potential areas of cooperation between Ibn Haldun University School of Communication and MGX Studio.
