Assoc. Prof. Derviş Zaim, one of the leading directors and screenwriters in contemporary Turkish cinema and the creator of numerous award-winning films such as “Tabutta Rövaşata”, “Cenneti Beklerken”, “Nokta, has begun teaching “Screenplay and Writing Techniques” in the Master’s Program in Radio, Television and Cinema at our university’s Faculty of Communication. Bringing together academic film education and industry experience, the course held its first session on September 28 at the Süleymaniye Campus Salis Madrasa.
In the opening session, Derviş Zaim explored the fundamentals of screenwriting. Focusing on the elements to consider when developing an idea into a screenplay, Zaim discussed narrative construction, dramatic structure and the core components of plot with students.
The class followed an interactive format, with students actively contributing through questions, comments and reflections. Drawing on his professional experience, Zaim shared observations on the different stages of the screenwriting process and discussed the ideas and narrative forms students wished to develop.
During the first class, Zaim also shared resources he considers important in screenwriting, providing a framework for reading and reflection to guide the semester’s work. This gave students the opportunity to explore the fundamental concepts of screenwriting through both theory and his extensive experience in directing and film production.
By giving students direct access to Derviş Zaim’s knowledge and expertise, the “Screenplay and Writing Techniques” course exemplifies our university’s approach to enriching academic education in Radio, Television and Cinema through the contributions of experienced industry professionals.
