In line with its vision of environmental sustainability, Ibn Haldun University has released its 2023 Carbon Footprint Report to the public, prepared under the responsibility of Assoc. Prof. Mehmet Karanfiloğlu, Chair of the School of Communication, with the support of the Scientific Research Projects (BAP) program. The report covers the activities at the Başakşehir Campus and calculates greenhouse gas emissions from electricity, natural gas, diesel, water, and climate control systems throughout 2023. It was prepared in accordance with internationally recognized methodologies (IPCC, GHG Protocol) and the ISO 14064-1:2018 standard.
According to the report’s findings, the university’s total carbon emissions for 2023 amounted to 2,511.73 tons of CO₂. Considering 2,234 academics, students, and administrative staff, the per capita annual emission was calculated as 1.124 tons of CO₂. The majority of emissions came from electricity consumption (71%) and natural gas use (24%), while emissions from transportation, water, and cooling systems remained at lower levels.
The report also proposed measures to reduce emissions, including expanding waste separation practices, organizing environmental awareness seminars, incorporating sustainability courses into the curriculum, initiating afforestation projects, adopting the ISO 50001 energy management system, and exploring alternative energy sources.
With its “Green Campus” approach, Ibn Haldun University continues to embrace environmental sustainability as an institutional priority. The carbon footprint report not only provided transparent disclosure of the current situation but also offered a roadmap for future actions.
